EmberForge isn't a frozen snapshot of a shut-down game. It's a living server built on a modern, purpose-built engine, and understanding that engine explains why the game feels better here.
Server-authoritative
The single most important design choice: the server owns the truth. Every item, every coin, every monster, every position, and every rule lives on the server, not the client. The client asks; the server decides. This is the foundation of fair play — it's why duplication and gold exploits are impossible by design (see Aurora Borealis), and it's why the world behaves consistently for everyone.
Data-driven and authorable
Nothing is hard-coded. Every number, drop table, spawn, quest, and tunable is data, layered in two tiers: the faithful base values, and an override layer where we add content and fix issues. That means balance changes, bug fixes, and new content ship continuously — the world improves while you play, without waiting for a new build. It's the TrinityCore philosophy applied to Verra.
Built to scale
The core runs as a high-concurrency engine backed by a real database (PostgreSQL/Timescale) for durable, transactional state — accounts, characters, inventories, the economy, and world progression that survive restarts and never corrupt.
What we learned
Getting a preserved client to speak to our own server was a deep reverse-engineering effort — the connection handshake, how the world streams in, how characters and actors replicate on the wire. We rebuilt all of it from the ground up, matching the client's real behavior exactly. The payoff is a server we fully control and can extend: we can fix what the original got wrong and finish what it left unfinished.
At a glance
- The server owns the truth — items, coin, monsters, positions and rules all live server-side.
- Two data tiers — faithful base values plus an override layer for new content and fixes.
- Continuous updates — balance, fixes and content ship without waiting for a new client build.
- Durable state — PostgreSQL/Timescale keeps accounts, characters and the economy safe across restarts.
